Exploring changing properties of materials

Last week we started to explore how some materials can change through a variety of self-exploratory provocations and through cooking. Almost every day, a small group of children from both EY2  classes participated in a cooking and oobleck-making activity with a focus on exploring HOW some materials can change.

The first group to cook made chocolate cornflake cakes. They examined the hard solid block of chocolate and wondered how they could change it in order to mix it with the cereal. Many of the children already had a good understanding of how heat can change materials and suggested that we MELT the chocolate. After describing the chocolate's visible properties before and after heating the children then mixed the cereal with the chocolate! A conclusion was made that the cakes were a success as the ingredients changed through HEAT and being MIXED together.

The second group baked bread. Just like the first group they wondered how they could change all the ingredients into something more solid like bread that would be yummy to eat! After MIXING and HEATING the ingredients we had bread rolls! The children combined icing sugar (a powder) with water (a liquid) to decorate the bread rolls.
